A chrome delete covers the shiny chrome trim on your car, usually the window surrounds, grille, badges and mirror caps, in black or colored film so it disappears into a cleaner, modern look. At Anocote Wraps, our San Diego wrap shop on Production Ave does chrome deletes in gloss and satin black vinyl, and it’s one of the fastest, most affordable ways to change how a car looks without touching the paint.
If you’ve been asking what is chrome delete and whether it’s worth doing, this covers the three ways to do it, what it costs, how long it lasts and what to watch out for.
Why Owners Black Out Their Chrome
Most of it is style. Bright chrome window trim made sense on cars twenty years ago. On a white BMW X5 or a gray Model 3 with black wheels, it looks dated, and blacking it out makes the car look lower and tighter.
There’s a practical reason too. Bright trim on many late-model cars is anodized aluminum or plated plastic, and it can haze, spot or stain over time. Coastal air in La Jolla and Del Mar speeds that up. Once trim looks cloudy, polishing rarely brings it back, and a chrome delete hides it completely.
And it’s reversible. Film comes off when you’re ready to sell or turn in a lease, and the trim underneath is protected the whole time.
Vinyl vs. PPF vs. Paint: Three Ways to Do It
There are three real options, and they’re not equal:
- Vinyl wrap film: the most common choice. Gloss black, satin black or a color to match the car, removable, and quick to install. This is what most of our chrome delete jobs use.
- Black or stealth PPF: thicker, self-healing film that adds chip protection to the trim. The data sheet for XPEL Ultimate Plus 10 lists 9.6 mil of total thickness, far heavier than wrap vinyl. It costs more and comes in fewer finishes, but it’s a good fit when the car is already getting paint protection film.
- Paint or powder coat: permanent. Parts have to come off the car and be refinished. It suits wheels, calipers and badges you never want to see in chrome again, but it’s not reversible.
For most daily drivers, vinyl is the right answer. It’s the lowest cost and the easiest to undo.
What Parts Get Blacked Out
The window surround, the strip of chrome that frames your side windows, is where most people start. It’s the biggest visual change for the least film. From there, owners add the grille surround, front and rear badges, mirror caps, door handles and the chrome strip across the trunk.
A full chrome delete covers all of it. A partial job might just do the windows and badges. Either way, we decide panel by panel at the estimate, and we’ll tell you which pieces are better left alone. Some grilles have so many small slats that film doesn’t hold up well, and painting them makes more sense.

How Much Is a Chrome Delete?
How much is a chrome delete depends on how many pieces you cover and how hard they are to wrap. Window trim alone is the smallest job. Add the grille, badges, emblems and handles and the time goes up, especially on parts that have to come off the car so the film tucks behind them.
The film matters too. Standard gloss or satin black costs less than specialty finishes or black PPF. A chrome delete is still one of the least expensive wrap services we offer, far below a full color change.

When a Chrome Delete Isn’t the Right Call
Film needs a sound surface. If the chrome is already peeling, blistering or pitted deep, vinyl will show every flaw and lift sooner. In that case, refinishing or replacing the part is the better spend.
Very small or heavily textured pieces are the other exception. Honeycomb grilles and tiny lettered badges can be wrapped, but the film works hard on every edge. We’ll point out those parts at the estimate rather than promise something that won’t last.
How Long It Lasts and How to Care for It
A quality cast film holds up for years. The manufacturer’s page for 3M Wrap Film Series 2080, one of the films used for chrome deletes, lists warranty coverage of up to eight years on vertical surfaces, which is exactly where window trim sits.
Real life comes in under the label. Sun, heat and how you wash the car all shorten the number.
Hand wash with a pH-neutral soap, skip brush car washes, and don’t aim a pressure washer right at the film edges. Our warranty and care guide covers the details. For more on vinyl lifespan, the wrap questions on our FAQ page go deeper.
One tip: if you’re also getting a ceramic coating, ask for it over the film. It makes the trim easier to clean. Our guide on PPF vs ceramic coating explains how the two work together.
Why a Chrome Delete Is the Best First Step Into Wraps
A chrome delete wrap is low cost, quick and fully reversible. Most are done in a day or two. If you’ve been thinking about a satin roof, a carbon hood or a full color change someday, it’s a low-risk way to see how your car looks with film on it.
We install films from 3M, Avery Dennison and Inozetek, and every piece is post-heated so edges stay down in San Diego heat. When you’re ready for more, our car wraps San Diego service handles everything from single panels to full color changes. Many owners also pair the look with legal window tint for a fully blacked-out profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a chrome delete damage the trim?
No. On healthy trim, vinyl protects the surface underneath and peels off cleanly. Trim that’s already peeling or flaking should be repaired first.
Can I get a chrome delete on a leased car?
Yes. It’s one of the most popular lease mods because the film comes off before turn-in. Check your lease terms, but most don’t prohibit removable film.
How long does a chrome delete take?
Most are done in a day or two, depending on how many parts you cover and whether pieces need to come off the car.
Do you do chrome deletes on Teslas?
Yes. Earlier Model 3 and Model S cars came with chrome window trim, and blacking it out is one of the most popular first mods on them. See our gallery of recent wraps for examples.
